HSD spindle: repair & service for minimum downtime
Comprehensive Service for HSD Spindle
If the motor spindle fails in your production facility, the entire CNC machine comes to a standstill – resulting in potential production downtime and high costs. HS Drive TeC offers CNC users and manufacturing companies in the wood, plastics and metalworking industries a fast, precise and cost-effective solution: As a highly specialized service provider, we carry out the professional repair of your HSD spindle and restore your production equipment to full performance as quickly as possible.
We are your trusted partner for the professional repair of HSD spindles, with extensive expertise that ensures smooth and precise manufacturing processes at your facility.
Service for HSD Spindles: repairs and original new products from a single source
As a certified HSD partner, we offer you a major advantage: In addition to the professional repair of HSD spindles, we also repair HSD processing aggregates and boring units, and supply all components from the Italian manufacturer as new products. Our service therefore covers the entire spectrum – from diagnostics and repair through to complete replacement.
HSD motor spindles are fitted as standard in countless CNC machines from leading international suppliers. They are particularly common in machines from manufacturers such as Biesse, Reichenbacher, Houfek, Homag Weeke, Felder and AES. Our spindle service is not limited to motor spindles, it also includes the professional repair of complex boring units and other mechanical components.
What typical faults occur in spindles?
During operation, mechanical and electrical stresses can cause a wide variety of faults in HSD motor spindles. The most common faults are:
leaks in the cooling system: In liquid-cooled spindles, defective seals can allow coolant to enter the interior of the motor spindle.
bearing damage: Natural wear or contaminated machining environments can damage the precision bearings, typically resulting in increased vibration and loud operating noise.
defects in the tool clamping system: Worn disc springs, worn clamping components or damaged drawbars can prevent tools from being correctly seated.
electrical faults: Short circuits in the windings, phase failures or damaged speed and vibration sensors can cause the frequency converter to shut down.
What causes a loss of performance?
A gradual decline in performance reduces the productivity of your entire system. There can be many reasons for this. One common cause is a deterioration in the transmission of clamping forces, resulting in tools slipping slightly and preventing cutting forces from being transferred efficiently. Inadequate electrical control, rotor defects or advanced bearing wear also increase mechanical resistance enormously. Compliance with strict manufacturing tolerances can no longer be guaranteed when such a drop in performance occurs.
Which wear parts are most commonly affected?
An HSD spindle consists of highly complex components, some of which are subjected to continuous stress. The components most commonly affected by wear are:
- precision bearings: These are constantly exposed to axial forces and high-speed peaks.
- clamping systems and disc spring assemblies: After thousands of automatic tool changes, the spring material gradually fatigues.
- seals and O-rings: These protect the inside of the spindle from swarf, dust and liquids, but lose their elasticity over time.
Regular maintenance and, where necessary, timely spindle repair can prevent serious consequential damage to expensive main components and reduce associated downtime.
How does overheating affect the spindle?
Insufficient cooling – whether caused by blocked ventilation ducts in air-cooled models or restricted cooling circuits in liquid-cooled systems – can quickly lead to overheating. Thermal expansion damages the lubricants in the bearings, leading to overheating and, in the worst case, bearing seizure. Excessive heat also affects the insulation of the stator windings and can result in irreversible electrical damage.
How can spindle damage be detected at an early stage?
To prevent a complete machine breakdown, operators should pay close attention to gradual changes in spindle behavior. The first warning signs that urgent repair may be required include:
- rough, noisy spindle operation at high speeds
- deteriorating surface quality and chatter marks on the workpiece
- unusually rapid or excessive heating of the spindle housing
- CNC control error messages relating to tool clamping or sensor systems
If any of these symptoms occur, prompt repair of the HSD spindle prevents prolonged machine downtime.
