What is a high-frequency spindle and how does it work?
A high-frequency spindle (often referred to as an HF spindle) is a rotating drive used in machines such as CNC milling machines, grinding machines or drilling systems to drive tools at extremely high speeds – usually in the range of 10,000 to over 100,000 revolutions per minute (rpm).
It is a compact, integrated electric motor that drives the tool interface directly and is specifically designed to achieve very high speeds on a continuous basis.
How high-frequency spindles work
1. Drive
An electric high-frequency motor inside the spindle generates the rotational motion. Most HF spindles are asynchronous and require a frequency inverter to set the desired speed precisely.
2. Tool interface
The tool (e.g. milling cutter, drill, grinding wheel) is clamped directly in the spindle using a collet or another clamping system.
3. Speed control
The frequency inverter enables stepless speed adjustment. The optimum speed is set based on the material and application.
4. Bearing system
A high-frequency spindle contains high-precision ball bearings or ceramic bearings capable of handling extreme speeds and forces – often using grease or air-oil lubrication.
